What should you know about a blood and bone marrow test?

A blood test measures features such as red cells, white cells, platelets, and sometimes markers of inflammation or organ function. Bone marrow is the soft tissue inside certain bones where blood cells are made. A marrow sample may be considered when blood results remain unexplained, cells look unusual, or production needs closer assessment. Results can contribute to investigating anaemia, dengue fever, glandular fever, brucellosis, chronic kidney disease, coeliac disease, Crohn’s disease, or chronic fatigue syndrome, but no result should be interpreted without the wider clinical picture.

Ask whether fasting is required and provide a complete list of medicines, supplements, allergies, and bleeding problems. A routine blood draw uses a needle in the arm. Bone marrow sampling uses local anaesthetic and a needle to collect material, commonly from the back of the pelvic bone. Pressure and a dressing are applied afterward. Follow wound-care instructions, keep the area clean, and ask when normal activity can resume. Results may take longer when the sample needs specialist analysis.

Contact the treating service for increasing pain, spreading redness, warmth, discharge, fever, or bleeding that does not stop with firm pressure. Seek urgent help for fainting, breathing difficulty, severe weakness, or signs of a serious allergic reaction. Do not wait for planned results if you become acutely unwell.
