Blocked nose without a cold: what to consider

Allergies may cause congestion, sneezing, itching or watery eyes even when you feel otherwise well. Smoke, perfume, dust and dry air can swell the nasal lining. Persistent facial pressure, thick drainage or reduced smell may occur with sinusitis or chronic sinusitis. Some nasal decongestant sprays can worsen blockage when used too often or for too long, so check the label and seek professional advice.

Track when the blockage happens, which side is affected and whether a room, product or outdoor setting precedes it. Reduce smoke and fragrance exposure, keep indoor air comfortable and try saline spray or a safe saline rinse. A clinician can examine the nose and review medicines. A pharmacist can advise whether allergy medication is appropriate.

Arrange a review for blockage that persists, repeatedly interrupts sleep, is confined to one side, or is accompanied by recurrent bleeding, pain, crusting or reduced smell. Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, swelling around an eye, severe headache, confusion or rapidly worsening illness.
