How is a blocked nose treated?

Nasal tissue swells when it is irritated or inflamed, narrowing the passage for air. A cold often improves as the infection settles. Allergic rhinitis may flare after exposure to pollen, dust or animals and often includes sneezing or itchy eyes. Sinusitis can add facial pressure and altered mucus. Repeated or persistent blockage may need assessment for chronic sinusitis, structural narrowing or sleep-related breathing problems.

Try a saline spray or rinse, drink regularly and avoid smoke or other irritants. Elevating your head slightly during sleep may make breathing more comfortable. A pharmacist can explain whether an allergy medicine or short-term decongestant is appropriate. Use medicated nasal decongestant sprays only as directed, because prolonged use can worsen congestion. Antibiotics do not treat ordinary viral colds.

Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, confusion or a severe headache with a stiff neck. Arrange a clinician review when blockage lasts, keeps returning, affects sleep, comes with high fever or severe facial pain, or is mainly on one side with bleeding or a foul smell.
