Short answer

To reduce snoring, improve nasal airflow, sleep on your side, avoid alcohol near bedtime and address contributing health conditions with clinical guidance.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why snoring happens

Snoring is produced when relaxed tissues in the nose, mouth or throat vibrate as air moves during sleep. Nasal blockage from Allergic Rhinitis or Chronic Sinusitis can narrow the passage. Sleeping on the back, alcohol near bedtime and excess tissue around the upper airway may add to the sound. Obstructive Sleep Apnoea presents with snoring in some people, alongside pauses in breathing, choking sounds, morning headaches or marked daytime sleepiness. Snoring alone cannot establish that condition.

Ways to reduce the noise

Try side sleeping, a regular sleep schedule and treatment of nasal congestion. Keep the bedroom free of smoke and manage allergy triggers. Avoid alcohol close to bedtime and review sedating medicines with a clinician rather than stopping prescribed treatment yourself. If weight is contributing, a supervised Weight Management Programme may support breathing and overall health. Nasal strips may improve airflow for some people but do not treat pauses in breathing. Record what a bed partner notices, including gasps or silent intervals.

When to seek care

Book a medical review if snoring is loud and frequent, disturbs sleep, or comes with morning headaches, poor concentration or daytime sleepiness. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting or blue lips. Ask for prompt assessment if someone observes repeated breathing pauses or choking during sleep, because untreated airway obstruction can affect health.

Questions for your doctor

Could nasal allergy or another blockage be contributing? Do my sleep symptoms suggest Obstructive Sleep Apnoea? Would a sleep assessment help? Which changes or devices are appropriate for me?

Snoring can occur with sleep apnoea, but pauses, choking, restless sleep and daytime sleepiness make assessment more important.
