The short answer
Bloating, burping and flatulence usually reflect swallowed air, digestion of food or gut sensitivity, but persistent symptoms need review. The timing of symptoms and changes in stool can provide useful clues.
How digestive gas develops
Air can be swallowed during fast eating, gum chewing or drinking through a straw. Gut bacteria produce gas as they break down some carbohydrates. Food Intolerance or Lactose Intolerance may increase symptoms after particular foods. Irritable Bowel Syndrome can heighten sensitivity to ordinary gas. Coeliac Disease, Giardiasis or Helicobacter Pylori Infection may be considered if gas comes with diarrhoea, pain, nausea or fatigue.
Reducing discomfort
Eat slowly, chew well and reduce fizzy drinks while you observe the pattern. Gentle walking may help movement through the gut. Change only one suspected food at a time and keep a symptom diary. Nutrition Counselling can support a balanced elimination and reintroduction plan when food triggers are suspected.
When to arrange help
Speak with a clinician if flatulence or bloating is new, persistent, disruptive or associated with altered bowel habits, vomiting, fever, weight loss or reduced appetite. Get urgent help for intense worsening pain, a rigid swollen abdomen, blood or black stool, repeated vomiting, fainting or chest symptoms.
Useful questions
Ask whether your symptoms fit a food-related pattern, whether testing is needed, and which dietary changes are reasonable without cutting out important nutrients.

Questions people ask
Is flatulence a normal digestive function?
Yes. Gas production and passing wind are normal, although a marked change or troublesome associated symptoms should be checked.
Can food intolerance cause burping as well as wind?
It can cause bloating and digestive discomfort, while burping may also result from swallowed air during meals.
