Light bleeding after sex: what to know

A single small smear may follow irritation, but bleeding that recurs, appears without an obvious reason, or happens after menopause should be checked by a clinician.

Penetration can irritate dry or delicate vaginal tissue. Other possibilities include inflammation or infection of the vagina or cervix, a cervical polyp, hormonal changes, or changes in cervical cells. Chlamydia can cause bleeding after sex, although it may cause no other symptoms. Cervical or vaginal cancer can present with bleeding after sex, but this symptom alone does not identify the cause.

The timing, amount, pain, discharge, menstrual pattern, pregnancy possibility, and menopausal status help narrow the explanation.

Note whether the blood was pink, red, or brown; how much appeared; and whether it happened during or after penetration. Record pelvic pain, unusual discharge, odour, urinary symptoms, or missed periods. Avoid penetration if it worsens pain or bleeding. A water-based lubricant may reduce friction when dryness is involved, but recurring bleeding still deserves evaluation.

A clinician may discuss pregnancy and infection testing, examine the vagina and cervix, and check whether cervical screening is due.

Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, fainting, marked dizziness, severe pelvic or abdominal pain, fever, or bleeding with a possible pregnancy. Arrange a prompt appointment if bleeding happens again, continues, occurs after menopause, or comes with pain or unusual discharge. Even light bleeding warrants assessment when you are concerned or cannot explain it.

Ask whether the cervix looks inflamed or has a visible lesion, whether infection testing is appropriate, and whether you need cervical screening or further examination. Mention medicines, hormonal contraception, recent procedures, vaginal dryness, pregnancy possibility, and the date of your last period.
