What should you know about bleeding after sx?

A small amount can follow friction or minor tissue irritation, but bleeding can also arise from vaginal dryness, inflammation, infection, cervical changes, a polyp, or another gynaecological condition. The amount of blood alone cannot identify the cause.

Dry or delicate vaginal tissue may bleed through contact, especially around or after menopause. Cervical inflammation and sexually transmitted infections can also cause contact bleeding, sometimes with unusual discharge, pelvic discomfort, pain during sex, or burning when urinating.

Less commonly, cervical or vaginal cell changes can present with bleeding after sex. This symptom does not establish cancer, but persistent or repeated episodes deserve examination so that concerning causes can be excluded.

Note when the bleeding occurred, its colour and amount, whether it has happened before, and whether there was pain, dryness, discharge, odour, or a missed period. Avoid sex if it worsens pain or bleeding. Arrange a medical appointment for unexplained or recurrent bleeding; assessment may include a pregnancy test, infection testing, and examination of the vagina and cervix.

If dryness seems related, a water-based lubricant may reduce friction, but it should not replace assessment when bleeding continues. Tell the clinician about contraception, hormone medicines, cervical screening history, and any possibility of pregnancy.

Seek urgent medical care for heavy or continuing bleeding, severe pelvic or abdominal pain, fainting, marked dizziness, weakness, fever, or feeling acutely unwell. If pregnancy is possible, bleeding with one-sided pain, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness, or fainting requires immediate assessment.

Bleeding after menopause should be assessed promptly even if it happened once or stopped quickly. Contact a clinician soon as well if bleeding follows an abnormal cervical screening result or is accompanied by persistent unusual discharge.

You could ask which examinations or tests fit your symptoms, whether infection testing is appropriate, whether medicines or hormonal changes could be contributing, and when you should expect results. Also ask what change in bleeding or pain should prompt urgent help while you wait.
