Why Bleeding Can Happen After Sex

The blood may originate from the vaginal surface, cervix, or uterus. Timing, amount, pain, discharge, menstrual pattern, pregnancy possibility, and menopausal status help narrow the explanation.

Dry or irritated vaginal tissue may leave a small smear of bright blood and feel sore or burning. Genitourinary syndrome of menopause can make vaginal tissue thinner, drier, and more prone to contact bleeding. Cervical inflammation, including inflammation linked with chlamydia, may cause bleeding with discharge or pelvic discomfort, though infection can occur without those clues.

A benign cervical growth or tissue change may bleed when touched. Cervical dysplasia can be symptomless but may present with unusual bleeding. Cervical cancer and vaginal cancer can present with bleeding after sex; an examination is needed because the symptom itself does not reveal which cause is present.

For a small isolated episode, note the amount, colour, duration, menstrual timing, and whether sex was painful or vigorous. Avoid further penetration while there is active bleeding or soreness, and use lubricant when you resume if dryness contributed.

Schedule a clinical review when the bleeding repeats, persists, occurs between periods, or has no clear minor trigger. The assessment may include questions about contraception and pregnancy, a vaginal and cervical examination, infection tests, and a check that cervical screening and any previous follow-up are current.

Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe pelvic or abdominal pain, fainting, significant dizziness, fever, or bleeding when pregnancy may be possible. These warning signs matter even if bleeding began immediately after sex.

Bleeding after menopause should be assessed promptly, even when it happens once. Recurrent contact bleeding, persistent abnormal discharge, worsening pain, or a known abnormal cervical result also calls for timely review.

Ask where the clinician thinks the blood originated, which examinations or tests could clarify the cause, and when you should return if initial results are normal but bleeding recurs. Share your last period, cervical screening history, medicines, contraception, pregnancy possibility, and any new sexual exposure.
