A small smear may follow friction or vaginal dryness, but bleeding can also arise from the cervix, infection, a polyp, or changes in vaginal tissue. The amount alone does not identify the cause.

Friction can irritate delicate tissue, particularly when there was limited lubrication. Hormonal changes around menopause may make vaginal tissue thinner and easier to injure. Discharge, pelvic discomfort, pain when urinating, or bleeding between periods can point toward inflammation or infection.

Cervical polyps and changes on the cervix can also bleed after contact. Cervical or vaginal cancer may present with bleeding after sex, but this symptom by itself does not establish cancer. An examination is the way to locate the source and decide whether testing is needed.

Pause penetration until bleeding and soreness have settled. Note the colour and amount, whether it happened during or after sex, and any pain, unusual discharge, odour, urinary symptoms, missed period, or possibility of pregnancy. A water-based or silicone-based lubricant may reduce friction when sex resumes.

Arrange a routine appointment if the bleeding recurs, has no clear friction-related explanation, or happens after menopause. A clinician may inspect the vagina and cervix, offer infection testing, check cervical screening history, or arrange further assessment according to the findings.

Seek urgent medical help for heavy or continuing bleeding, fainting, marked dizziness, severe pelvic or abdominal pain, fever, or feeling very unwell. If pregnancy is possible, bleeding with one-sided pain, shoulder-tip pain, weakness, or collapse needs emergency assessment because these can accompany an ectopic pregnancy.

Ask where the bleeding appears to come from, whether infection or pregnancy testing fits your situation, and whether your cervical screening is current. You can also ask what changes should prompt urgent care and when it is reasonable to resume penetrative sex.
