Bleeding after rough sex

Friction can injure the vulva or vaginal lining, particularly when lubrication was limited. Deeper pain or more substantial bleeding can signal a larger injury, while recurring contact bleeding may have a cervical or vaginal cause unrelated to intensity.

Superficial abrasions often sting when urine touches them and may leave a small smear of bright blood. A deeper vaginal tear can cause continuing bleeding, swelling, or significant pain. Objects or forceful penetration can also injure tissue beyond what is visible externally.

If bleeding happens after sex more than once, possibilities include dryness, infection, a cervical polyp, or cervical inflammation. Cervical dysplasia, cervical cancer, and vaginal cancer can present with bleeding after sex. The fact that sex was rough does not rule these conditions in or out.

Stop penetration and avoid inserting tampons, toys, or other products while the area heals. Gently rinse the external vulva with water, pat dry, and use a pad if needed to monitor blood. Do not put antiseptic or perfumed products on injured genital tissue.

When fully comfortable, resume only with consent, slower contact, and generous compatible lubricant. Stop if pain returns. Arrange an examination if you cannot see the source, suspect a retained object, notice a deep cut, or experience another episode of bleeding.

Seek urgent care if bleeding is heavy or will not settle, pain is severe or worsening, swelling increases quickly, you feel faint, or a wound looks deep or gaping. Fever, difficulty passing urine, foul discharge, abdominal pain, or a retained object also needs prompt medical assessment.
