Bleeding after sex every time: why an examination matters

Book a gynaecology or primary-care appointment even when the amount is small. Repetition suggests that tissue is being irritated consistently or that the vagina or cervix bleeds readily on contact.

Dry or fragile vaginal tissue, a cervical surface change, inflammation, infection, or a local lesion may cause contact bleeding. Genitourinary syndrome of menopause often presents with vaginal dryness and discomfort, while chlamydia can cause an inflamed cervix that bleeds with contact.

Cervical dysplasia may be found during investigation, and cervical or vaginal cancer can present with bleeding after sex. Those conditions cannot be diagnosed from the symptom pattern alone. Examination identifies where the blood originates and guides the right tests.

Until reviewed, stop penetration when bleeding or pain occurs and consider avoiding it if the tissue remains sore. Lubricant may reduce friction, but improvement with lubricant does not replace evaluation of bleeding that has happened repeatedly.

Record the dates, approximate amount, blood colour, menstrual timing, type of sexual contact, and any dryness, deep pain, discharge, odour, sores, urinary symptoms, or bleeding between periods. Bring your cervical screening history, medicine list, contraception details, and pregnancy possibility to the appointment.

Seek urgent help if the flow is heavy or persistent, or if you develop severe abdominal or pelvic pain, fainting, significant dizziness, weakness, fever, or bleeding with possible pregnancy. Prompt care is also appropriate after a sexual injury or non-consensual contact.

Tell the booking service if bleeding occurs after menopause, between periods, or with abnormal discharge or pelvic pain so it can triage the appointment appropriately. A previous normal screening result does not explain a current episode and should not delay symptom assessment.

Ask whether the blood appears vaginal, cervical, or uterine; whether infection testing and a cervical assessment are indicated; and how dryness or hormonal changes could be treated. If an abnormality is found, ask what it means and what examination or procedure comes next.
