Bleeding after deep sex

Deep penetration may press against the cervix or stretch the upper vagina, especially when tissue is dry or sensitive. The timing can suggest irritation, but it cannot by itself establish where the blood came from.

Contact can disturb a fragile area on the cervix, an inflamed cervix, a cervical polyp, or dry vaginal tissue. Genitourinary syndrome of menopause can present with reduced lubrication, burning, painful sex, and contact bleeding. Chlamydia can present with cervical inflammation and bleeding after intercourse.

Cervical dysplasia, cervical cancer, and vaginal cancer can present with bleeding after sex, although this symptom alone cannot tell you which condition is present. Recurrent contact bleeding calls for examination of the vagina and cervix even when it occurs without pain.

Pause penetration until the bleeding and tenderness have resolved. Note whether blood appeared during sex or later, its colour and amount, the depth or position involved, and any discharge, odour, urinary symptoms, or lower abdominal pain.

For future consensual sex, choose positions that let you control depth, slow down when contact feels sharp, allow more time for arousal, and use a compatible lubricant. If bleeding happens again, arrange a gynaecology or sexual health visit. The clinician may examine the cervix and offer cervical screening or infection tests when appropriate.

Seek urgent care if bleeding is heavy or will not slow, or if you have faintness, severe pelvic pain, fever, vomiting, a swollen abdomen, or trouble urinating. A suspected internal or deep vaginal injury also requires urgent examination.

Request a prompt non-emergency appointment if contact bleeding recurs, appears between periods, starts after menopause, or comes with unusual discharge. Do not postpone review solely because the bleeding stops after sex.

Ask whether the blood appears vaginal or cervical, whether an infection test or cervical screening is indicated, and whether dryness is contributing. You can also ask which positions or treatments may make sex more comfortable and when follow-up is needed.
