Bleaching stretch marks: what to expect before and after

Stretch marks are changes within the skin, not surface stains. A lightening product may affect surrounding pigment without correcting the texture, indentation or underlying altered collagen.

Newer stretch marks may look red, purple or brown, while older ones often become paler. Their colour can also contrast differently after tanning or pigment treatment. Lightening the surrounding skin may reduce contrast in some areas, but uneven fading can also outline the marks more clearly.

Strong lightening agents, acids or unlabelled mixtures can cause burning, inflammation, darker patches after irritation, or unusually pale areas. Before-and-after photographs can be misleading when lighting, pose, skin hydration or camera settings differ.

Stop any product that causes burning, swelling, blistering or a spreading rash. Wash it off gently, avoid scrubs and fragranced products, and protect the area from sun while it settles. Do not apply household bleach to skin.

A dermatologist can assess the mark's colour, age, texture and your skin tone before discussing options such as microneedling or fractional energy treatment. These approaches aim to improve appearance rather than erase every mark, and several sessions may be considered.

Arrange prompt assessment for a chemical burn, severe pain, blisters, raw skin, rapidly increasing redness, pus, fever or swelling of the face. Seek routine dermatology advice if discolouration persists after irritation or if stretch marks appeared suddenly without an obvious trigger.

Ask whether the goal should be colour blending, texture improvement or both; which option suits your skin tone; what temporary pigment changes are possible; and which active products should be stopped before a procedure.
