Black warts on the face: what to know

Tiny black dots can represent small blood vessels that have clotted within a wart. Colour alone cannot identify a growth, and several harmless or concerning lesions can resemble a wart. Because facial skin scars and discolours easily, avoid cutting, burning or treating an uncertain spot at home.

Common warts are rough growths caused by a viral infection in the outer skin. Dark pinpoints may become more visible after rubbing or minor trauma. A whole lesion can also darken when irritated or when its surface tissue is damaged.

A clinician may examine the texture, border, colour pattern and surrounding skin, sometimes using a magnifying skin instrument. A smooth pigmented spot, a crusted sore or a rapidly changing growth may require a different evaluation rather than wart treatment.

Keep the area clean, do not pick it, and avoid sharing razors or towels that touch it. Pause shaving directly across the growth to reduce bleeding and spread to nearby skin. Photographing it in consistent light can help you describe later changes.

Once the diagnosis is clear, treatment can be tailored to the lesion and its location. Options may include carefully performed freezing, electrosurgery, other wart-removal methods or selected prescription medicines. Facial treatment needs controlled depth to limit burns, scars and pigment change.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if the diagnosis is uncertain, the growth is new and dark, or it changes in size, shape, colour or surface. Prompt review is also appropriate for repeated bleeding, an open sore that does not heal, marked pain, spreading redness, pus, or a lesion close to the eyelid.

Seek earlier advice if your immune system is weakened or if several facial growths are appearing quickly. These factors can alter both the assessment and the safest choice of therapy.

Ask what features support a wart diagnosis, whether closer examination or sampling is needed, and which option offers the most suitable balance between clearance and the risk of facial marking. Mention previous treatments, bleeding, recent changes and any tendency to form raised scars or dark marks.
