Black Spots After Pimples

These flat marks are not the same as indented or raised acne scars. They can gradually fade, but new pimples, picking, irritation, and ultraviolet exposure can keep producing or deepening them.

Inflammation signals pigment-producing cells to release more melanin into the affected area. The result can be brown, deep brown, grey-brown, or nearly black depending on skin tone and the depth of pigment. Acne commonly presents with repeated comedones and inflamed pimples, so marks may appear in several stages at once.

A flat colour change suggests pigment, whereas a depression or thickened bump indicates a change in skin structure. Folliculitis can also present with follicle-centred bumps that leave similar marks, which is why the original eruption matters.

Control the active breakouts first: cleanse gently, use non-comedogenic moisturiser, and avoid squeezing pimples. Consistent broad-spectrum sunscreen and shade help stop ultraviolet light from making pigment more noticeable.

A dermatologist can match acne and pigment treatments to your skin sensitivity, pregnancy status, current medicines, and depth of discolouration. Using several strong acids, retinoids, scrubs, or lightening products together can cause irritation and create more pigment, so introduce treatment carefully.

A spot that grows, changes outline or colour, bleeds, crusts repeatedly, or did not clearly begin as a pimple should be examined as a separate lesion. Rapidly spreading redness, marked tenderness, fever, or swelling near the eye needs prompt medical attention.

Ask which marks are pigment and which are scars, what is driving ongoing breakouts, and which ingredients are appropriate for your complexion. Bring a list of skin products and medicines, and mention menstrual patterns, facial hair changes, irritation, picking, and previous procedures when relevant.
