Biopsy under the arm: what to expect

Short answer
An underarm biopsy removes cells or tissue so a laboratory can identify what is causing an abnormal lump or lymph node.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Purpose
- To identify the cells or tissue within an abnormal underarm area
- Possible methods
- Fine-needle sampling, core-needle sampling, or surgical removal
- Result
- A pathology report interpreted alongside examination and imaging findings
The short answer
The sample may come from a lymph node, skin, or other soft tissue in the armpit. The technique depends on the lump's position, its appearance on imaging, and how much tissue the laboratory needs. A biopsy can help distinguish infection or inflammation from benign changes or cancer; the lump alone cannot provide that diagnosis.
Why this biopsy is done
A clinician may use a fine needle to collect cells, a core needle to obtain a narrow piece of tissue, or a small operation to remove part or all of a node. Ultrasound can guide the needle to the intended area. Local anaesthetic numbs the skin, although pressure or brief discomfort can still occur.
A pathologist examines the sample's cell pattern. Additional laboratory methods may identify proteins on the cells, and selected findings may lead to further testing. Results can be inconclusive if the sample is too small or does not capture the abnormal area, so repeat sampling is sometimes considered.
Preparing and caring for the site
Before the appointment, give the team a current list of medicines and supplements, especially anything that affects bleeding. Do not stop a prescribed medicine unless the clinician managing the biopsy tells you how and when. Mention allergies, pregnancy, previous bleeding problems, and any skin infection near the armpit.
Afterward, follow the dressing, bathing, lifting, and pain-relief instructions supplied by the clinic. Mild bruising, tenderness, or a small amount of swelling can follow needle sampling. Keep the site clean and note when and how the result will be communicated.
When to seek medical care
Contact the biopsy team promptly if bleeding continues despite firm pressure, swelling is rapidly increasing, pain is worsening rather than settling, or the area becomes increasingly red, hot, or drains pus. Fever, faintness, breathing difficulty, or swelling of the face or throat needs urgent medical assessment.
If arm or hand swelling develops, or numbness and weakness appear after the procedure, report these changes without waiting for the pathology appointment.
Questions for your care team
Ask which structure is being sampled, which biopsy method is planned, whether imaging guidance will be used, and what preparation is required. Clarify how to care for the wound, who to contact after hours, when results are expected, and what might happen if the sample does not give a clear answer.
Questions people ask
Does an underarm biopsy mean cancer is suspected?
A biopsy investigates an abnormal area; infection, inflammation, benign changes, and cancer can have overlapping appearances. The pathology result helps establish the cause.
Can I drive after an underarm biopsy?
That depends on the biopsy method, any sedating medicine, discomfort, and the clinic's instructions. Arrange transport if sedation or a surgical procedure is planned.
What if the biopsy result is unclear?
The team may compare the sample with imaging, request additional laboratory tests, or discuss another biopsy if the tissue was insufficient or findings do not match.
