Short answer

Biomet bone cement is a surgical material used in selected procedures to anchor implants or stabilise treated bone.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Material role
It provides mechanical fixation or stabilisation in selected operations.
Not living tissue
Bone cement hardens but does not transform into natural bone.
Product choice
The surgical team matches the formulation and technique to the procedure.

The short answer

Despite its name, bone cement does not turn into living bone or glue a fracture together in the everyday sense. The surgical team mixes components that harden in place, creating mechanical fixation or filling a prepared space. Exact composition and intended use depend on the named product.

What bone cement does during surgery

In a cemented joint replacement, the material fills the small space between an implant and prepared bone, helping transfer load by interlocking with the bone surface. In vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty, a different procedure places suitable cement into a treated vertebra under imaging guidance.

The surgeon selects the product, viscosity and working technique for the operation. Some formulations may contain an antibiotic, but that feature does not treat every infection and does not replace sterile technique or a broader infection plan. Cemented and uncemented fixation are both established options for particular situations.

What patients can do before and after the procedure

Before surgery, provide a complete allergy history and mention previous reactions to bone cement, antibiotics or operating-room materials. Ask whether cemented fixation is planned and what patient or bone factors shaped that choice. You do not need to handle or prepare the material yourself.

Afterwards, follow the operation-specific instructions for wound care, weight-bearing, medication and rehabilitation. The cement may become firm during the procedure, but muscles, bone and the incision still need recovery time. Keep scheduled follow-up so the team can assess healing, implant position and function.

Warning signs after a procedure

Contact the surgical team promptly for increasing wound redness, warmth, drainage, fever, worsening pain after initial improvement, or a new inability to use the operated limb as instructed. Sudden severe back pain or new numbness or weakness after a spinal cement procedure also needs urgent assessment.

Call emergency services for sudden breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, confusion, or a cold pale limb. These symptoms can indicate a serious postoperative problem and should not wait for a routine appointment.

Questions about the planned material

Ask for the exact name of the cement and why it suits the planned procedure. Useful follow-ups include whether it contains an antibiotic, how fixation affects rehabilitation, what alternatives were considered and where the implant and material details will be recorded for future care.

Questions people ask

Is bone cement used in every joint replacement?

Bone cement is not used in every joint replacement. Implants may use cemented, uncemented or combined fixation, depending on the operation, implant design, bone quality and the surgeon's clinical assessment.

Can bone cement wear out or loosen?

The fixation can change over time if the implant, cement or surrounding bone is affected. New pain or loss of function needs assessment rather than an assumption about which part is responsible.

Can I feel the cement inside the bone?

The material itself is not normally felt as a separate object. Postoperative sensations more often come from the incision, swelling and healing tissues, but unexpected or worsening symptoms should be assessed.
