Short answer

Bio Concepts compression garments apply controlled pressure and should be selected, fitted and reviewed by a trained lymphoedema professional.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Purpose
Supports fluid movement and helps manage swelling.
Fit
Should feel supportive without causing pain, numbness or skin colour change.
Review
Needed when the garment slips, creases or no longer matches the affected area.

Direct answer

They may be prescribed for an arm, leg or another affected area after cancer treatment. The garment supports fluid movement and helps limit swelling, but it does not replace skin care, movement or other parts of a lymphoedema plan.

What the garment does

Compression provides firmer support at selected areas and works with muscle movement to encourage fluid away from tissues. Garments come in different shapes, fabrics and pressure levels. A clinician considers the location and pattern of swelling, skin condition, hand strength and daily activities before recommending a style. A brand name alone does not establish the correct size or pressure.

Using it day to day

Put the garment on as demonstrated, smoothing wrinkles rather than pulling hard at the upper edge. Check that seams, bands and folds are not digging into the skin. Keep the fabric clean and follow its care instructions because heat, stretching and wear can change how it fits. Arrange reassessment if swelling changes, the garment slides, or putting it on becomes difficult.

When to seek care

Remove the garment and contact your care team promptly if it causes new numbness, tingling, marked pain, a colour change, unusual coolness, broken skin or rapidly increasing swelling. Seek urgent medical care for sudden breathlessness or chest pain. Red, hot, tender skin with fever or feeling unwell also needs prompt assessment because infection may require treatment before compression is resumed.

Questions for your clinician

Ask which pressure, length and fabric suit your swelling; whether the garment should cover the hand or foot; when it should be worn or removed; and how often fit needs checking. If dexterity is limited, ask for a demonstration of donning aids and an alternative closure or fabric.

Questions people ask

Can I choose a compression garment by clothing size?

No. Measurements, swelling pattern and the prescribed pressure all affect selection, so ordinary clothing size is not enough.

Should I sleep in the garment?

Wear it overnight only if your lymphoedema clinician has specifically recommended a garment and schedule suitable for sleep.

What if the garment leaves marks?

Light, temporary impressions can occur, but deep grooves, persistent redness, pain, tingling or colour change warrant removal and a fit review.
