What should you know about bio concepts compression garments?

They may be prescribed for an arm, leg or another affected area after cancer treatment. The garment supports fluid movement and helps limit swelling, but it does not replace skin care, movement or other parts of a lymphoedema plan.

Compression provides firmer support at selected areas and works with muscle movement to encourage fluid away from tissues. Garments come in different shapes, fabrics and pressure levels. A clinician considers the location and pattern of swelling, skin condition, hand strength and daily activities before recommending a style. A brand name alone does not establish the correct size or pressure.

Put the garment on as demonstrated, smoothing wrinkles rather than pulling hard at the upper edge. Check that seams, bands and folds are not digging into the skin. Keep the fabric clean and follow its care instructions because heat, stretching and wear can change how it fits. Arrange reassessment if swelling changes, the garment slides, or putting it on becomes difficult.

Remove the garment and contact your care team promptly if it causes new numbness, tingling, marked pain, a colour change, unusual coolness, broken skin or rapidly increasing swelling. Seek urgent medical care for sudden breathlessness or chest pain. Red, hot, tender skin with fever or feeling unwell also needs prompt assessment because infection may require treatment before compression is resumed.

Ask which pressure, length and fabric suit your swelling; whether the garment should cover the hand or foot; when it should be worn or removed; and how often fit needs checking. If dexterity is limited, ask for a demonstration of donning aids and an alternative closure or fabric.
