Can a copper coil bend or move?

You cannot reliably diagnose a bent coil from cramps, bleeding or the threads alone. A device may be lower than intended, partly expelled, embedded in the uterine wall or, less often, damaged. The practical concern is whether it remains safely placed and dependable for contraception.

The copper IUD device is designed to sit inside the uterus with threads extending through the cervix. Threads can soften, curl or seem different as the cervix changes position, so a thread change does not prove that the device has bent. Conversely, a position problem may produce no obvious symptom.

Possible clues include new pelvic pain, pain during sex, bleeding that is much heavier or different from your established pattern, feeling hard plastic at the cervix, or threads that are suddenly absent, longer or shorter. An examination and, when needed, ultrasound can show where the coil is. The clinician can then advise whether it should remain, be removed or be replaced.

Do not pull the threads, try to straighten the device or push anything back into place. Arrange a contraception or gynaecology appointment for a position check. Until a clinician confirms that the coil is correctly placed and working, use condoms or avoid sex that could result in pregnancy.

If unprotected sex has already occurred, contact a healthcare professional or pharmacy promptly to discuss emergency contraception; the appropriate option depends on timing and the coil's position. Take a pregnancy test if advised or if your period is late or unusually light. If the copper coil must be removed, ask when alternative contraception begins to protect you.

Seek urgent medical assessment for sudden, severe or worsening lower abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, fever, foul-smelling discharge, fainting or marked dizziness. These symptoms need evaluation for infection, pregnancy complications or another pelvic problem regardless of how likely coil movement seems.

Possible pregnancy with a coil in place needs prompt clinical advice. Severe one-sided pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, collapse or dizziness with pregnancy symptoms requires emergency care because an ectopic pregnancy must be excluded.

Ask whether the coil can be seen or felt in the expected position, whether ultrasound is needed, and whether contraception could have been reduced. Clarify whether removal or replacement is recommended, what to expect during that procedure, and which backup method to use.
