Can Benadryl help chickenpox itching?

Benadryl is a brand name used for products that may contain diphenhydramine, a sedating antihistamine. Ingredients and formulations can differ, so check the active ingredient and ask a pharmacist which product is appropriate for the person's age, symptoms, health conditions and other medicines.

Chickenpox commonly presents with an itchy rash that develops into fluid-filled blisters and then crusts. Diphenhydramine can dampen histamine-related itch and may make the person sleepy. Contact a clinician early if chickenpox affects a pregnant person, a newborn, an adult, or anyone with reduced immunity or significant chronic skin or lung disease. If more diphenhydramine than directed was taken, obtain urgent poison or medical advice even if no symptoms are apparent.
