What should you know about a BD DEXA scan?

DEXA uses low-dose X-rays to compare the density of your bones with reference values. The test commonly examines the hip and lower spine, takes only a short time, and does not require an incision. A result can help a clinician identify low bone density, follow changes over time, or consider whether further assessment is needed. It is one part of your health picture, alongside age, previous fractures, medicines, hormone changes, and other conditions. Premature ovarian insufficiency can affect bone health, so mention menstrual or hormone changes when discussing why the scan was requested.

Follow the imaging centre's instructions. Tell the team if you might be pregnant, have recently had a contrast examination, or take calcium supplements, because these details may affect timing or preparation. Wear clothing without bulky metal fasteners if advised. During the scan, lie still while the scanner passes over the selected area; the technologist may ask you to change position. You can normally return to your usual activities afterwards unless your clinician gives different advice. Ask which bones were measured and when the report will be reviewed.

A DEXA scan is not an emergency test. Seek prompt medical advice after a significant fall or if you develop sudden severe back or hip pain, a new deformity, or difficulty standing or walking. Arrange a review if you have repeated fractures, long-term steroid treatment, or concerns about a result, because these factors may change the next step.
