Barking cough and temperature: what to know

A barking sound often comes from swelling around the voice box and windpipe. A raised temperature can accompany the infection causing that swelling. A cough can also linger after a common cold or acute bronchitis, while acid reflux, allergic rhinitis, asthma, or another airway problem may contribute without causing a temperature. The sound alone cannot identify the cause.

Notice whether the person is breathing comfortably between coughs. Listen for a harsh noise when breathing in, watch for ribs pulling inward, and note whether they can drink, speak, and stay alert. These details help a clinician judge urgency.

Keep the person upright and calm, offer frequent fluids, and allow rest. Use a thermometer according to its instructions and record the reading, timing, and other symptoms. Avoid smoke, strong fragrances, and very hot steam, which can irritate the airway or cause burns. Use only age-appropriate medicines and follow the label or a clinician’s advice; do not give a child another person’s prescription.

If the cough is new, keep distance from vulnerable household members while the person has fever or feels unwell, wash hands, and improve ventilation. Arrange medical advice if the temperature persists, the cough worsens, or the person has a medical condition affecting breathing.

Seek emergency help immediately for struggling or noisy breathing, blue or grey lips, pauses in breathing, severe drowsiness, inability to swallow fluids, or rapid worsening. A child who is pulling in at the neck or between the ribs needs urgent assessment.

Contact a clinician promptly for a persistent or recurrent temperature, dehydration, chest pain, coughing blood, unusual weakness, or a cough that is not settling. Babies, older adults, and people with lung or immune conditions may need earlier advice.

Ask: Could the sound come from upper-airway swelling? What temperature or breathing changes should prompt urgent help? Which fluids or medicines are suitable for this person? Does the examination suggest a common cold, bronchiolitis, or another cause?
