What should you know about balloon tissue expander?

It is placed during an operation and contains a port. At clinic visits, the surgical team adds sterile saline through the port in stages. The expander is later exchanged for a long-term implant or used as part of another reconstruction plan.

Expansion creates space gradually rather than in one operation. You may feel pressure, tightness, or pulling after a fill; this should generally settle rather than keep worsening. The number and size of fills depend on healing, comfort, skin condition, and the reconstruction goal.

The breast mound can look firm, high, or uneven during this temporary stage. Its appearance does not show the final result. If radiotherapy is planned or has already been given, your reconstructive team may adjust the timing and pace of expansion.

Follow the wound, drain, bathing, bra, and activity instructions from your surgical team. Take prescribed pain relief as directed, and avoid pressing, massaging, or trying to locate the port unless you have been told to do so. Keep every fill appointment because the clinician also checks the skin and incision.

Before each visit, note any new redness, fluid leakage, fever, increasing tightness, or change in breast shape. Tell the team about planned dental or medical procedures and any treatment that may affect healing.

Contact the surgical team promptly for spreading redness, increasing warmth or swelling, wound opening, cloudy or foul-smelling drainage, fever, sudden breast flattening, or pain that is intensifying despite prescribed medicine. These changes can signal infection, fluid collection, skin problems, or damage to the expander.

Seek urgent medical help for difficulty breathing, chest pain, fainting, or a severe allergic reaction. Do not wait for the next expansion appointment when a warning sign is progressing.

Ask where the expander sits, how fills will be scheduled, which sensations are expected afterward, and what activities are restricted. Confirm how to reach the team outside clinic hours and what the next reconstructive operation may involve.
