Bad posture and a neck lump

Forward head position and prolonged muscle tension may change the contour of the upper back and neck or produce a tender knot. They do not explain an enlarging lymph node, skin cyst, thyroid swelling, or another discrete mass.

Muscle tightness often changes with movement, pressure, rest, or workstation position and may feel like a band rather than a separate object. A true lump may remain palpable when the neck relaxes and may sit in the skin, beneath it, along a lymph-node chain, or near the thyroid.

Infections and benign skin or fatty growths are possible explanations. Head and neck cancer, lymphoma, thyroid cancer, and cancer first detected in a neck node can also present with a neck mass. The condition-to-symptom relationship does not mean that a neck lump identifies any one of these conditions.

Change position gently and relax the shoulders to see whether the prominence alters, but do not repeatedly squeeze it. Note its location, tenderness, mobility, skin changes, growth, and how long it remains. Record recent throat, dental, ear, scalp, or skin infections as well.

Arrange an examination for a separate mass that persists, enlarges, feels hard or fixed, returns after settling, or has no obvious connection to muscle use. A clinician may examine the mouth, throat, scalp, thyroid, and lymph-node areas before deciding whether imaging or sampling is useful.

Get emergency help if swelling interferes with breathing or swallowing or increases rapidly during an allergic reaction. Seek prompt medical review for rapid growth, spreading redness with fever, persistent hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, an unexplained mouth sore, drenching night sweats, or unexplained weight loss.

Consider asking whether the finding behaves like muscle or a discrete mass, which nearby structures could be involved, whether an infection explains it, when imaging is warranted, and what persistence or growth should lead to further investigation.
