Cleanse gently after sweating and choose products labelled non-comedogenic. Do not squeeze with fingernails or use abrasive tools; pressure can injure the follicle, trigger inflammation and leave marks.

A topical retinoid can help prevent pore contents from building up, but it may irritate at first and is not suitable for everyone. Introduce active products cautiously, use moisturiser and daytime sun protection, and obtain pregnancy-specific advice before using a retinoid. Professional extraction should use clean technique and does not replace preventive care.

See a dermatologist if lesions become painful, deep or inflamed; if scarring or persistent dark marks develop; or if a careful routine is not improving the problem. Extensive acne may require prescription options.

Seek earlier advice when the change follows a new medicine or is causing significant distress. Isotretinoin is reserved for selected acne cases and requires clinician supervision because its precautions and monitoring differ from ordinary skin care.

Ask whether the bumps are open comedones, which current products might block or irritate pores, and how to combine treatments without damaging the skin barrier. Discuss pregnancy plans, eczema, sensitive skin and any tendency to develop raised scars.
