What should you know about a bad barking cough?

A barking cough may occur with a common cold or another upper-airway infection. Acid reflux and allergic rhinitis can irritate the throat, while asthma, acute bronchitis, bronchiolitis, or bronchiectasis can produce different cough patterns. In a child, a harsh cough with a noisy breath may signal swelling around the voice box. The sound alone cannot identify the cause; age, fever, duration, and breathing effort help guide assessment.

Keep the person calm and sitting comfortably, offer frequent fluids, and avoid smoke, strong fragrances, and dusty air. Follow any prescribed inhaler plan. Do not give honey to an infant, and check age restrictions before using cough medicines. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on suitable symptom relief, especially for young children or people with asthma.

Call emergency services for blue or grey lips, pauses in breathing, severe pulling in at the ribs, inability to speak or cry normally, unusual sleepiness, or collapse. Seek prompt assessment for noisy breathing at rest, drooling, difficulty swallowing, or a cough that is rapidly worsening. Arrange a review if it persists, returns repeatedly, or interferes with sleep or activity.
