Avoiding stretch marks in pregnancy: what is realistic

Short answer
Pregnancy stretch marks cannot always be avoided; moisturise for comfort, protect irritated skin and be cautious with active ingredients.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Cause
- Stretch marks form as deeper supportive skin tissue responds to change.
- Skin care goal
- Reduce dryness and friction rather than expect complete prevention.
- Later options
- Procedure choice depends on the marks, skin tone and treatment timing.
What can you do about pregnancy stretch marks?
Products sold for prevention may soften dry skin, but they cannot control every change occurring in deeper supportive tissue. A routine should focus on comfort and skin-barrier care rather than promises of complete prevention.
How stretch marks change
Early stretch marks may be narrow, coloured streaks with a different texture from nearby skin. They often arise where tissue is expanding, including the abdomen, breasts, thighs, hips and buttocks. Some are mildly itchy as they develop.
Over time, the lines usually fade toward a paler or more silvery shade and feel less raised. They are a form of scarring within the skin and are not contagious. Their presence does not indicate harm to the pregnancy.
Choose a simple daily routine
Smooth an unscented cream or ointment over damp skin after a short, lukewarm shower. Reapply when tightness returns, and use soft clothing to limit friction across the abdomen or breasts. Keep nails short if itching leads to scratching.
Avoid harsh scrubs, home needling and products that inflame the skin in the hope of stimulating repair. Pregnancy changes which medicines and cosmetic ingredients are appropriate, so check unfamiliar active products with a pharmacist, dermatologist or maternity clinician before use.
After birth, give your body time to recover before judging the final appearance. If you later want treatment, a clinician can assess the age and colour of the marks, your skin tone, breastfeeding considerations and your tolerance for recovery time.
Get help for concerning itch or rash
Contact your maternity team if itching becomes severe, interferes with sleep, affects the palms or soles, or occurs widely without an obvious rash. These patterns deserve assessment even when stretch marks are also present.
Urgent help is appropriate for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or tongue, blistering, fever, or a painful rash that spreads quickly. Do not assume these features are a normal part of skin stretching.
Questions for a treatment consultation
Ask whether your marks are still changing, which result is realistic and how a proposed procedure could affect pigmentation. For options such as RF Microneedling or Carboxytherapy, ask about discomfort, downtime, aftercare, breastfeeding precautions and whether the clinician has experience treating your skin tone.

Questions people ask
Will drinking more water stop stretch marks?
Normal hydration supports general wellbeing, but extra water cannot ensure that stretch marks will not develop.
Is itching over a stretch mark normal?
Mild local itching can occur as skin changes. Severe, widespread or palm-and-sole itching should be reported to your maternity team.
Will the marks disappear after delivery?
They often become flatter and less strongly coloured, but some lines or texture may remain. A clinician can discuss cosmetic options after recovery.
