Can you avoid stretch marks during pregnancy?

Short answer
You cannot reliably prevent pregnancy stretch marks, but gentle moisturising can ease tightness and itching as your skin changes.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Prevention
- No cream or routine can reliably stop pregnancy stretch marks.
- Comfort
- A plain moisturiser may soothe dryness, tightness and mild itching.
- Appearance
- New marks often change in colour and flatten as they mature.
Can pregnancy stretch marks be prevented?
Stretch marks reflect changes within the skin as the body grows and hormones affect supportive tissue. Creams and oils may make the surface feel more comfortable, yet no routine can promise that marks will not form.
What pregnancy stretch marks are
Stretch marks are lines that appear when deeper layers of skin adapt to change. During pregnancy they may develop on the abdomen, breasts, hips, thighs or buttocks. New marks can look pink, red, purple or darker than surrounding skin and may feel slightly raised or itchy.
They commonly become flatter and less noticeable with time, although some texture or colour difference can remain. Whether they appear is influenced by skin characteristics, family tendency and how the body changes; it is not a sign that you cared for your skin incorrectly.
Care for stretching skin
Apply a fragrance-free moisturiser after bathing and whenever skin feels dry. Choose lukewarm rather than very hot water, use a mild cleanser and avoid vigorous scrubbing over itchy areas. Loose, breathable clothing can reduce rubbing.
Maintain ordinary balanced meals and follow your maternity clinician's guidance on pregnancy weight and hydration. Rapid restriction, supplements marketed for stretch marks, or concentrated skin products should not be started solely to prevent these lines.
Check before using medicated or highly active skincare during pregnancy. If you want cosmetic treatment later, wait until after pregnancy and discuss timing, breastfeeding and skin tone with a qualified clinician.
When skin changes need assessment
Tell your maternity clinician about intense or widespread itching, particularly when there is little visible rash or the palms and soles are affected. Seek assessment for blistering, rapidly spreading rash, fever, painful skin, facial swelling or breathing difficulty.
A new itchy eruption around stretch marks may have a cause other than the marks themselves. Prompt evaluation helps identify pregnancy-related skin conditions and guides treatment that is suitable during pregnancy.
What to discuss with your clinician
Ask which moisturisers or itch treatments are suitable now, whether the pattern needs examination and when postpartum cosmetic care could be considered. If marks remain bothersome, discuss the likely benefit, recovery and pigment-change risk of options such as Microneedling or Fractional Laser Treatment for your skin.

Questions people ask
Do stretch marks mean I gained weight incorrectly?
No. They reflect how supportive tissue responds to body and hormonal changes, and people can develop them despite sensible pregnancy care.
Are oils better than moisturising creams?
Either may reduce dryness if it suits your skin, but neither can guarantee prevention. Stop a product if it causes stinging, redness or a rash.
Can stretch marks be treated while I am pregnant?
Comfort-focused skin care is generally the priority. Discuss medicated products and procedures with your maternity and skin clinicians, because timing and suitability matter.
