What to know about an at-home trich test

Some kits let you collect a vaginal swab at home and send it to a laboratory; others provide a result at home. Check that the test specifically includes Trichomonas vaginalis, follow its collection instructions exactly, and read how the provider handles positive or unclear results.

A positive result suggests the parasite was detected and should lead to clinical care for confirmation or treatment according to the kit provider's pathway. Symptoms alone cannot diagnose trichomoniasis because vaginal discharge, itching, burning and discomfort can have other causes.

A negative result does not rule out infection when the sample was collected incorrectly, testing happened outside the kit's recommended window, or symptoms continue. An invalid or unclear result should be repeated only as directed or checked through a clinic rather than interpreted as negative.

Arrange care after a positive result because trichomoniasis is treated with prescription medicine taken by mouth. Do not use leftover antibiotics or vaginal products as substitutes. Tell the clinician if you are pregnant, may be pregnant, breastfeeding, have medication allergies, or take other medicines.

Current sexual partners also need evaluation and treatment to prevent the infection passing back and forth. Avoid sex until you and your partners have completed treatment and symptoms have resolved. A clinician may recommend tests for other sexually transmitted infections and repeat testing after treatment.

Book a clinical assessment if discharge, itching, pain when urinating, genital soreness or discomfort during sex persists despite a negative home result. Seek prompt care for lower abdominal or pelvic pain, fever, vomiting, pregnancy with symptoms, bleeding unrelated to a period, or symptoms that are worsening.

Get urgent help if pelvic pain is severe, you faint, feel very unwell, or cannot keep fluids down. These warning signs need assessment for causes beyond trichomoniasis rather than another home test.

Ask whether your home result needs a laboratory confirmation, which other infections should be tested for, how partners can access treatment, and when sex can safely resume. If symptoms remain after medicine, ask whether reinfection, an untreated partner, incomplete treatment or another diagnosis needs checking.
