Managing a miscarriage at home

Short answer
Some miscarriage care can happen at home after clinical assessment, with clear instructions and access to follow-up.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Before home care
- The diagnosis and suitability of the approach should be clinically assessed.
- Useful supplies
- Large pads, prescribed pain relief, fluids and a working phone.
- Follow-up
- A planned check helps establish whether the miscarriage is complete.
The short answer
Bleeding and cramping may occur as pregnancy tissue passes naturally or after prescribed medicine. A clinician should first confirm the diagnosis and discuss whether waiting, medication or a procedure fits your medical needs and preferences.
What home management may involve
The bleeding may be heavier than a usual period and may include clots or tissue. Cramping can come in waves and then ease after tissue passes. The experience varies with pregnancy stage and the chosen approach.
Your care team may arrange ultrasound, symptom review or another check to confirm that the miscarriage is complete. A home pregnancy test can remain positive for a while, so follow the timing and interpretation instructions supplied by your clinician.
Preparing for care at home
Keep large sanitary pads, prescribed pain relief, fluids and a charged phone nearby. Use pads rather than internal menstrual products while bleeding so the amount is easier to observe. If possible, arrange for a trusted adult to stay with you during the expected heavier phase.
Follow the written medicine instructions exactly and know whom to call after hours. Rest as needed, drink regularly and record bleeding, pain, temperature and any medicine taken. Emotional reactions can be intense or delayed; support from someone you trust or a bereavement service may help.
When to get urgent help
Seek urgent medical advice if bleeding rapidly soaks pads, pain is severe or worsening despite advised relief, you develop fever, feel very unwell, notice unpleasant-smelling discharge, or cannot keep fluids down. These symptoms can signal heavy blood loss, infection or another condition needing assessment.
Call emergency services for fainting, collapse, confusion, marked weakness, severe one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain or breathing difficulty. One-sided pain with dizziness can occur with an ectopic pregnancy, which cannot be managed as a routine miscarriage at home.
Questions to clarify before going home
Confirm which symptoms are expected, how to use each medicine, what bleeding threshold should prompt a call, and the direct contact for urgent concerns. Ask how completion will be checked, when normal activities can resume and what options remain if tissue does not pass.

Questions people ask
Can I diagnose a miscarriage by bleeding at home?
No. Bleeding can have several causes in pregnancy, and assessment may include examination, ultrasound or other clinical checks.
Should I collect tissue that passes?
Only if your care team has specifically requested it and explained how. Otherwise, ask what they recommend, as local practice and your circumstances may differ.
