Astro radiotherapy: what the term may mean

Confirm the intended meaning with the oncology team because radiotherapy is also used for several other cancers. The treatment plan should name the condition, area being treated, purpose and expected schedule.

Radiotherapy directs controlled radiation at a defined target to damage tumour cells while limiting exposure to nearby healthy structures. Planning usually uses scans, a reproducible body position and equipment that helps the team deliver treatment to the intended area.

For a brain tumour, the target and dose pattern depend on the exact diagnosis, previous surgery, scan findings and nearby brain functions. In other cancers, the same treatment method is adapted to a different body region and clinical goal. The word radiotherapy alone therefore does not describe a complete plan.

Bring the current medicine list and tell the team about implanted devices, pregnancy or the possibility of pregnancy, difficulty lying still, and previous radiotherapy. Follow the department's instructions about skin products, medicines and eating before appointments.

Side effects depend on the treated area. Fatigue and local skin changes can occur, while brain treatment may also affect hair in the treatment field and temporarily worsen swelling-related symptoms. Report changes early so the team can assess their cause and offer supportive care.

Use the oncology service's urgent contact route for a new or worsening symptom during treatment. Emergency assessment is needed for a new seizure, sudden weakness, severe confusion, loss of consciousness, major breathing difficulty or uncontrolled bleeding. Do not wait for the next radiotherapy appointment when these occur.

Clarify the exact diagnosis being treated, the purpose of radiotherapy, which area will receive radiation, how the team will protect nearby organs, which side effects are expected and whom to contact outside normal clinic hours.
