What a High AST Liver Test Result May Mean

One abnormal value cannot identify a cause by itself. Your clinician will consider the laboratory's reference range, the degree and pattern of elevation, other blood results, symptoms, medicines, alcohol use, recent illness, and strenuous exercise.

AST is an enzyme found in liver cells, skeletal muscle, heart, and other tissues. When cells are irritated or damaged, AST can enter the bloodstream. Comparing AST with ALT, bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase, albumin, and sometimes creatine kinase helps clarify whether the pattern points more toward the liver, bile ducts, or muscle.

Possible explanations include fatty liver changes, viral hepatitis, alcohol-related liver injury, medication or supplement effects, and muscle injury after heavy activity. A temporary rise may settle, while a persistent or increasing result deserves further assessment.

Arrange follow-up with the clinician who ordered the test. Bring a complete list of prescription medicines, non-prescription products, herbal remedies, and gym supplements, and mention recent hard exercise, muscle pain, fever, vomiting, or alcohol intake. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without medical advice.

Depending on the overall pattern, the clinician may repeat the blood test, review previous results, request tests for hepatitis or muscle injury, or arrange liver imaging. Until reviewed, avoid alcohol and avoid starting new supplements marketed for liver cleansing, because some can worsen liver injury or obscure the cause.

Seek urgent medical care if an abnormal AST result occurs with yellow skin or eyes, confusion, unusual drowsiness, severe or worsening upper abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fainting, black stools, vomiting blood, marked abdominal swelling, or difficulty breathing.

Contact a clinician promptly for dark urine, very pale stools, persistent loss of appetite, new widespread itching, worsening weakness, or easy bruising. These symptoms do not establish a diagnosis, but they can signal impaired liver or bile flow and should not wait for a routine appointment.

Ask how far the result is from that laboratory's reference range, whether ALT and the rest of the liver panel show a similar pattern, and whether an earlier result is available for comparison. Also ask if recent exercise, alcohol, medicines, or supplements could explain the change and when testing should be repeated.
