Anal warts: what to know

They may be flat, raised, smooth, or clustered and can occur without discomfort. Treatment can remove visible growths, but follow-up may be needed because warts can return.

These warts develop after infection of surface skin with certain types of human papillomavirus, commonly shortened to HPV. Transmission occurs through close skin contact; penetrative sex is not required.
