Short answer

Cellulitis of the arm needs prompt medical assessment because antibiotics are usually required, and the choice and route depend on severity, health factors, allergies, and response.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical treatment
A clinician-selected antibiotic
Helpful measure
Elevating the arm when practical
Urgent change
Rapidly spreading redness or worsening general illness

The short answer

Milder infection may be treated with medicine taken by mouth, while a person who is very unwell, cannot take oral medicine or has rapidly progressing infection may need treatment through a vein. A clinician should select the antibiotic rather than relying on leftovers.

How arm cellulitis develops

Cellulitis is a bacterial infection in deeper skin and nearby soft tissue. It can enter through a cut, cracked skin, an insect bite, an injection site or another small break that is difficult to see. The affected arm can become red, warm, swollen and painful; cellulitis commonly presents with these changes.

The clinician may mark the visible edge of redness to track spread and examine for pus, a wound, restricted movement or swollen lymph nodes. A collection of pus can require drainage in addition to antibiotic treatment.

Treatment and care at home

Start the prescribed antibiotic as instructed and complete the planned course unless the prescriber changes it. Tell the clinician about allergies, pregnancy, kidney or liver problems, recent antibiotics and medicines that may interact.

Rest the arm and elevate it on pillows when practical to ease swelling. Drink fluids, protect any broken skin with a clean dressing and check the affected area for spread. Do not massage the inflamed tissue or apply unprescribed creams to an open wound.

Signs that need urgent attention

Seek urgent review if redness is spreading quickly, pain or swelling is intensifying, fever develops, red streaks travel up the arm, the hand becomes numb or difficult to move, or pus appears. Contact the treating service if symptoms fail to begin settling after antibiotics are started.

Call emergency services for confusion, collapse, breathing difficulty, mottled skin or extreme drowsiness. These are warning signs of severe systemic illness rather than a reason to wait for the next scheduled dose.

What to ask at your appointment

Ask how soon the arm should be rechecked, which side effects require a call and whether a wound or abscess needs separate care. Also discuss recurring swelling, eczema, lymph-node surgery, immune-suppressing treatment or diabetes because these details may influence management.

Questions people ask

Can I use an antibiotic left from another infection?

No. It may be the wrong medicine, dose or course, and taking it can delay appropriate assessment of a spreading infection.

Should I draw around the redness?

A clinician may mark its edge to monitor spread. If you do this at home, record the time and still seek care promptly if redness extends beyond the line or symptoms worsen.

Is arm swelling expected with cellulitis?

Cellulitis often presents with swelling, warmth, pain and redness. Marked swelling, altered sensation or difficulty moving the hand needs urgent review.
