Side effects after an anti-tetanus shot

How the structures involved in Tetanus differ from normal

Short answer

Soreness, redness, or swelling where the tetanus vaccine was given can occur and usually settles without specific treatment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Expected area
The arm around the injection site
Helpful measure
Gentle movement and a cool, clean cloth
Emergency sign
Trouble breathing or swelling of the face or throat

Direct answer

Some people also feel tired, develop a headache, feel mildly unwell, or notice a raised temperature. The exact reaction can differ according to the tetanus-containing vaccine used and other vaccine components included in the same injection.

Understanding vaccine reactions

Local tenderness reflects an immune response around the injection site and does not mean that the vaccine caused tetanus. Tetanus toxoid cannot produce tetanus infection.

A reaction that begins soon after vaccination and affects breathing, circulation, or several body systems is different from ordinary arm soreness. That pattern may represent a severe allergic reaction and needs emergency treatment.

Managing discomfort

Move the vaccinated arm gently and place a cool, clean cloth over a tender area. Rest and drink enough fluids if you feel feverish or tired. Avoid rubbing or repeatedly pressing the injection site.

If you are considering a pain reliever, check that it is suitable for your age, pregnancy status, medical conditions, allergies, and other medicines. A pharmacist or clinician can help you choose safely. Record when symptoms started and whether they are improving.

When to seek care

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives with faintness, confusion, or collapse. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or cannot breathe normally.

Contact a healthcare professional if pain or swelling is severe, continues to worsen, limits use of the limb, or is accompanied by persistent fever. Also report a new symptom that concerns you, especially after a previous serious vaccine reaction.

Before another dose

Tell the vaccinator which product you received, when the reaction began, what symptoms occurred, and whether emergency treatment was required. Ask whether the reaction changes the choice or timing of your next tetanus-containing vaccine.

Questions people ask

Can the tetanus shot give me tetanus?

No. The vaccine uses an inactivated form of the toxin and cannot cause tetanus infection.

Is a sore arm a reason to avoid every future dose?

A sore arm alone does not automatically prevent later vaccination. Describe the reaction to your vaccinator so they can assess its severity and your vaccine history.
