Side effects after an anti-tetanus shot

Local tenderness reflects an immune response around the injection site and does not mean that the vaccine caused tetanus. Tetanus toxoid cannot produce tetanus infection.

Move the vaccinated arm gently and place a cool, clean cloth over a tender area. Rest and drink enough fluids if you feel feverish or tired. Avoid rubbing or repeatedly pressing the injection site.

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives with faintness, confusion, or collapse. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or cannot breathe normally.

Contact a healthcare professional if pain or swelling is severe, continues to worsen, limits use of the limb, or is accompanied by persistent fever. Also report a new symptom that concerns you, especially after a previous serious vaccine reaction.

Tell the vaccinator which product you received, when the reaction began, what symptoms occurred, and whether emergency treatment was required. Ask whether the reaction changes the choice or timing of your next tetanus-containing vaccine.
