Anti-snoring surgery: assessment and options

There is no single operation for all snoring. The proposed procedure should target a specific finding in the nose, soft palate, tonsil area, tongue base or jaw, and expectations should include the possibility that noise can persist or return.

Nasal surgery may improve airflow when structural blockage is present, but better nasal breathing does not always stop vibration in the throat. Other procedures reshape or stiffen the soft palate, remove enlarged tonsils, reposition tissues near the tongue, or alter the jaws.

The choice depends on examination findings and whether obstructive sleep apnoea is present. Because obstructive sleep apnoea presents with repeated airway blockage, treatment aims must address breathing as well as sound.

An ear, nose and throat assessment can identify visible obstruction, while a sleep evaluation may be needed when symptoms suggest apnoea. Tell the surgeon about bleeding problems, dental or jaw issues, medicines, smoking and previous airway procedures.

Ask what structure the operation changes, what non-surgical choices remain, and how the result will be checked. Recovery varies by procedure and can involve throat pain, swelling, altered swallowing, voice changes or temporary diet changes. Follow instructions on medicines, hydration and returning to normal activity.

Use the surgeon's discharge instructions because warning signs differ by operation. Seek urgent care for trouble breathing, fresh or increasing bleeding, inability to swallow fluids, rapidly increasing neck or mouth swelling, fainting or confusion.

Contact the surgical team for worsening pain despite the advised medicines, persistent vomiting, signs of dehydration or a fever that meets the threshold stated in your discharge plan. Later, report ongoing choking, witnessed pauses or severe daytime sleepiness rather than assuming the operation resolved sleep apnoea.

Ask which anatomical finding supports the procedure, whether sleep testing is needed first, what changes to swallowing or speech are possible, and what follow-up will measure. Clarify the recovery plan, whom to call after hours, and whether another treatment would still be needed if sleep apnoea is confirmed.
