Anti-dandruff care: what to know

The useful part of an anti-dandruff product is its active ingredient and how consistently it reaches the scalp. Hair type, scalp sensitivity, and the cause of scaling all affect which option is suitable.

Dandruff causes visible scalp flakes and may occur with itching or oiliness. Seborrheic dermatitis can present with more noticeable redness, greasy scale, or involvement around the hairline, eyebrows, ears, or sides of the nose. Other problems, including psoriasis, eczema, contact reactions, and fungal infection, can also produce a scaly scalp, so persistent symptoms may need a diagnosis rather than repeated product changes.

Medicated shampoos may reduce yeast activity, loosen scale, or calm inflammation, depending on the ingredient. A cosmetic shampoo that simply removes flakes may improve appearance without controlling the process that makes them return.

Read the label because application and contact time differ between products. Work medicated shampoo into the scalp rather than only the hair, leave it on for the stated time, and rinse thoroughly. Avoid combining several strong scalp products at once if this causes burning, dryness, or increased redness.

Once symptoms settle, some people need occasional maintenance use because dandruff can recur. Conditioner can be applied mainly to the hair lengths if the treatment dries the hair. Stop a new product and rinse it away if it causes marked stinging, swelling, or a spreading rash.

Arrange a clinician or dermatologist review if scaling remains troublesome despite correct product use, or if the diagnosis is uncertain. Seek earlier assessment for a painful or intensely inflamed scalp, crusting, oozing, pus, open sores, fever, patchy hair loss, or a rash spreading beyond typical dandruff areas. Sudden facial swelling or breathing difficulty after a product needs urgent medical help.

Ask whether the scale looks like dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema, or infection; which active ingredient fits your scalp; how long the product should stay on; and what maintenance routine may limit recurrence. Mention pregnancy, allergies, broken skin, hair treatments, and every scalp product you already use.
