Ant bite cellulitis: signs and next steps

A small itchy bump can be a local bite reaction rather than cellulitis. Cellulitis can extend beyond the original spot with increasing redness, warmth, swelling or tenderness, especially where skin has been scratched or broken.

A local reaction is often centred on the bite and may itch more than it hurts. Cellulitis commonly presents with an enlarging area of red, hot, swollen and painful skin. The edge may be difficult to define, and fever or chills can accompany a more significant infection.

The ant does not directly cause every infection. Bacteria can enter through the puncture or through damage caused by scratching. People with reduced immune defences, poor circulation, persistent swelling or diabetes may need particularly prompt assessment, but cellulitis can occur without those factors.

Gently wash the area with soap and water, avoid scratching or squeezing it, and keep the affected limb raised when practical. Arrange a same-day clinical review if redness is spreading, pain is increasing, pus appears, or you feel feverish. A clinician may mark the edge to track change and decide whether antibiotics are needed.

If antibiotics are prescribed, take them exactly as directed and do not share leftover medicine. Reassessment is important if the area continues to expand, new symptoms appear, or you are not improving as the clinician expected. Avoid applying irritating home remedies to broken skin.

Seek urgent medical help for rapidly spreading redness, severe or rapidly worsening pain, red streaks, blistering, dusky or numb skin, fever with confusion, unusual sleepiness, fast breathing, faintness or very little urine. These are warning signs of a serious infection or systemic illness.

Call emergency services for difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, throat tightness, collapse or widespread hives soon after a bite. Those features suggest a severe allergic reaction rather than cellulitis and require immediate treatment.

Ask whether the changes fit cellulitis, an allergic bite reaction or a collection of pus; whether any wound needs cleaning or drainage; how to monitor the border; when improvement should become noticeable; and which symptoms should send you directly to urgent care.
