What is the anserine bursa?

How the structures involved in Bursitis differ from normal

Short answer

The anserine bursa is a small fluid-filled cushion on the inner side of the knee below the joint.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Location
Inner knee, below the joint line
Function
Reduces friction between tendons and shin bone
Irritation name
Pes anserine bursitis

The short answer

Also called the pes anserine bursa, it helps reduce friction between the shin bone and nearby tendons. Irritation in this area is known as pes anserine bursitis and can produce focused inner-knee tenderness.

Location and symptom pattern

The bursa lies beneath tendons from the sartorius, gracilis, and semitendinosus muscles. Discomfort is generally felt below the inner knee joint line rather than directly inside the joint. Stairs, rising from a chair, running, or pressing the spot may aggravate it.

Inner-knee pain has several possible sources, including the meniscus, a ligament, a tendon, or the knee joint itself. A clinician uses the exact tender area, onset, swelling pattern, movement tests, and injury history to distinguish them. Pain in this location does not automatically mean the bursa is inflamed.

Managing irritation

Temporarily reduce the activity that repeatedly provokes the area while keeping comfortable general movement. A wrapped cold pack may ease soreness after activity; protect the skin and use short applications. Review footwear, training changes, and movements that load the inner knee.

If symptoms persist, physiotherapy may address flexibility, leg strength, movement control, and a gradual return to activity. A clinician can advise whether anti-inflammatory medicine is suitable given your stomach, kidney, heart, pregnancy, allergy, and other medication considerations. Injection is considered only after confirming the likely pain source and discussing risks.

Warning signs

Arrange assessment if pain persists, keeps returning, follows a twist or impact, or limits walking and sleep. Seek urgent care for a hot, red, rapidly swelling knee, fever, an open wound near the area, or inability to bear weight after injury.

Sudden swelling of the calf or whole leg, chest pain, or breathlessness needs emergency evaluation because those features are not typical of isolated bursa irritation.

Questions for the visit

Ask which structure appears to be painful, whether the knee joint itself is involved, and what activity changes are appropriate. If a procedure is proposed, clarify its purpose, possible side effects, aftercare, and how the response will guide the next step.

Questions people ask

Is the anserine bursa inside the knee joint?

It is outside the joint. The bursa sits on the upper inner shin, underneath a group of tendons.

How is pes anserine bursitis diagnosed?

Diagnosis is usually clinical, based on symptom history and precise examination. Imaging may be considered if the diagnosis is uncertain or another knee problem is suspected.

Does anserine bursa pain need aspiration?

Aspiration is not routinely needed. The bursa is small, and treatment often begins with load adjustment and rehabilitation. A clinician decides whether any procedure is appropriate after examining the swelling and considering other causes.
