A laboratory report may instead mention Trichomonas vaginalis, which is the parasite that causes the infection. These terms do not describe separate diseases.

A positive test means the parasite was detected in the sample. It does not show exactly when the infection began, and the absence of symptoms does not rule it out. Trichomoniasis can cause vaginal discharge, genital irritation, discomfort during urination, or pain during sex, but those symptoms also occur with other conditions.

Because symptoms are not specific, diagnosis is made with an appropriate laboratory test. A clinician may collect a vaginal swab or request urine, depending on the testing method and your circumstances.

Take the entire prescribed oral treatment exactly as directed. Tell current sexual partners so they can be assessed and treated at the same time. Do not resume sex until everyone involved has completed treatment and any symptoms have cleared, as untreated infection can pass between partners again.
