Can anosmia be permanent?

Some people regain smell after nasal inflammation or an infection settles. Recovery is less predictable when smell receptors, nerves, or relevant brain pathways have been injured, and an individual outcome cannot be confirmed from symptoms alone.

Continuing nasal swelling, chronic sinusitis, nasal growths, or allergic rhinitis may keep odours from reaching receptors. Smell can also remain altered after COVID-19 or another viral illness, following head trauma, or with certain neurological or medicine-related causes.

A clear nasal passage does not rule out a problem in the smell pathway. Conversely, ongoing blockage may be treatable, so persistent anosmia should not be assumed irreversible without assessment.

Arrange a medical review to look for causes that can be addressed. A clinician may examine the nose, review medicines and medical history, assess smell function, or refer to an ear, nose, and throat specialist when appropriate.

Smell training is a low-intensity option for some acquired forms of loss. It uses repeated, gentle attention to several familiar scents over time; irritating chemicals and substances placed inside the nose should be avoided.

Fit and test smoke and gas alarms, follow food storage dates, and seek another person's help with suspected spoiled food or gas leaks. Enhance meals with texture, temperature, colour, and herbs rather than excess salt or sugar.

Prompt clinical review is warranted for one-sided nasal blockage, recurring nosebleeds, persistent facial swelling or pain, worsening headaches, or smell loss after a head injury. A new unexplained change should also be assessed rather than simply watched indefinitely.

Get emergency help if smell loss occurs with new weakness, facial droop, confusion, trouble speaking, seizure, severe sudden headache, or difficulty breathing.
