What should you know about anaphylaxis what causes it?

Short answer

Anaphylaxis happens when the immune system releases powerful chemicals after a trigger, commonly a food, medicine, insect sting, or latex exposure.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

The trigger differs between people and is not always obvious during the emergency. Exercise, alcohol, infection, or certain medicines may sometimes help a reaction develop when combined with a particular allergen.

How a trigger causes the reaction

In an allergic reaction, the immune system misidentifies a substance as a threat. Chemical mediators then widen blood vessels, make them leak fluid, tighten airway muscles, and irritate the skin or digestive tract. This combination explains why symptoms can appear in several body systems.

Food allergy is an important cause, but a previous mild response does not reliably predict how a later exposure will unfold. Some episodes remain without an identified trigger even after a careful history and assessment.

What to do about a suspected trigger

During a reaction, use a prescribed adrenaline auto-injector promptly and call emergency services. Move away from the source when this can be done safely, but do not make the person stand or walk. Do not induce vomiting after a food exposure.

After recovery, record what was eaten, taken, touched, or encountered before symptoms, along with packaging, ingredient lists, medicine names, and the sequence of events. Avoid the suspected trigger until a clinician has assessed it; broad food restriction without guidance can make nutrition and diagnosis harder.

When a reaction needs emergency care

Breathing difficulty, wheezing, throat tightness, voice change, faintness, confusion, or collapse after a possible exposure requires emergency action. Rapid symptoms involving different body systems, such as widespread hives with vomiting or dizziness, are also concerning.

Seek emergency assessment even if adrenaline improves the symptoms, as they may return. Do not deliberately re-expose yourself to a suspected allergen to test whether it was responsible.

Investigating the cause

Ask which details from the episode narrow the possible triggers, whether allergy testing is appropriate, and how results will be interpreted alongside the history. Clarify which substances to avoid, whether related products are safe, and what should be written in your personalised emergency plan.

Questions people ask

Can exercise cause anaphylaxis?

Exercise can be a trigger in some people or can act with a particular food or other factor. A clinician can help identify the pattern and create safer activity guidance.

Can a medicine cause anaphylaxis even if I took it before?

Yes. A serious allergic reaction can occur after previous exposure without anaphylaxis. Record the exact medicine and seek specialist advice before taking it again.

Does every reaction have an identifiable cause?

No. A detailed history and selected tests may still leave the trigger unclear, in which case an emergency plan remains essential.
