Amigo ECG machine: what patients should know
Updated

Short answer
An Amigo ECG machine records the heart’s electrical signals, helping a clinician assess heart rate, rhythm and selected electrical patterns.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- What it records
- Electrical signals from the heart
- Patient experience
- Adhesive electrodes are placed on the skin
- Who interprets it
- A qualified clinician considers the tracing and clinical context
The short answer
Small adhesive electrodes placed on the skin detect signals and send them to the device, which produces a tracing. The machine records electrical activity; it does not send electricity into the body. Features can differ by model, so the clinic should explain the particular equipment being used.
What an ECG can and cannot show
The tracing may reveal an irregular rhythm, an unusually fast or slow rate, or electrical changes that require further assessment. A clinician interprets it alongside symptoms, examination findings and medical history. An automated message printed by the device is a preliminary analysis and is not a diagnosis by itself.
A short recording captures only that moment. Symptoms that come and go may require longer monitoring, while some heart problems need blood tests or imaging because they do not appear clearly on a standard ECG. A normal tracing therefore does not explain every episode of chest discomfort, breathlessness, dizziness or palpitations.
Before and during the recording
Wear clothing that allows access to the chest, wrists and ankles, and tell the clinician about implanted heart devices, skin sensitivities and current symptoms. Oils or lotions can prevent electrodes from sticking. The clinician may clean or shave small skin areas to obtain a clear signal.
Lie still, relax your muscles and breathe normally while the tracing is collected, unless the operator gives different instructions. Movement, talking and poor electrode contact can create artefact that resembles an abnormal signal. Afterwards, the pads are removed and you can usually return to normal activity unless your symptoms or clinical plan require otherwise.
When symptoms need urgent care
Call emergency services for chest pressure or pain that is severe or persistent, especially with sweating, nausea, breathlessness, collapse, or discomfort spreading to the arm, back, neck or jaw. Also seek emergency help for fainting with ongoing palpitations, severe breathing difficulty or sudden weakness and speech trouble.
Do not delay emergency care to arrange an ECG yourself or rely on a previous normal result. For brief recurrent palpitations, unexplained dizziness or reduced exercise tolerance without emergency features, arrange a clinical assessment and describe when the episodes happen and how long they last.
Questions about your ECG
Ask whether a clinician has reviewed the tracing, what any reported change means in the context of your symptoms, and whether comparison with an earlier ECG is useful. If the recording did not capture an episode, ask whether longer rhythm monitoring or another test would be more informative.

Questions people ask
Does an ECG machine give an electric shock?
No. During a routine recording, the electrodes detect electrical signals produced by the heart; they do not deliver electricity into the body.
Does a normal ECG rule out every heart problem?
No. A standard ECG is a brief snapshot, and some conditions are intermittent or require other types of testing. Your symptoms still guide further assessment.
Is the machine’s printed interpretation final?
No. Automated interpretations can help flag patterns, but a clinician should review the tracing and relate it to your symptoms and history.
