How an ambulance ECG machine is used

Adhesive electrodes connect to the device through leads, producing tracings that trained clinicians interpret alongside symptoms, examination findings, and other observations. The test does not send electricity into the body.

The tracing shows the timing and pattern of electrical signals as they travel through the heart. It can reveal a heart rate that is unusually fast, slow, or irregular and may show patterns associated with reduced blood flow to heart muscle. Movement, poor electrode contact, body hair, and muscle tension can distort the signal. A normal-looking tracing does not explain every cause of chest discomfort, breathlessness, fainting, or palpitations, and electrical changes can evolve over time.

Tell the ambulance team exactly when the symptoms began, what they feel like, and whether they come and go. Mention heart conditions, implanted devices, allergies, and medicines, including any dose already taken. Keep still and breathe normally while the tracing is captured unless the paramedic gives different instructions. Electrodes may need repositioning or the recording may be repeated. Depending on the findings and your condition, the team may transmit the tracing, begin treatment, or arrange transport for further evaluation.

Call emergency services for chest pressure or pain that is severe, persistent, or accompanied by breathlessness, sweating, nausea, collapse, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, shoulder, or back. Sudden fainting, severe breathing difficulty, new weakness on one side, or a sustained rapid or irregular heartbeat with dizziness also needs emergency assessment. Do not drive yourself when symptoms could impair consciousness or deteriorate on the way. The ambulance team can monitor you and respond if your condition changes.

Ask what rhythm was recorded, whether the tracing changed during your symptoms, and whether another ECG or blood test is needed. You can also ask which activities to avoid while awaiting assessment and what symptoms should prompt another emergency call. Keep any discharge documents available because they may describe the ambulance tracing and treatment already given.
