Alopecia areata affecting the eyebrows

One eyebrow may be affected before the other, and loss can occur with or without a visible scalp patch. The underlying skin commonly retains follicle openings and lacks the scar-like shine of scarring disorders.

Alopecia areata interrupts growth in affected follicles without replacing them with scar tissue. A dermatologist may find tapered or broken hairs, small dots at follicle openings, or fine early regrowth when examining the brows with magnification.

Eyebrow loss also has other causes. Repeated plucking, threading trauma, skin inflammation, thyroid problems, nutritional issues, infection, and some scarring conditions can create overlapping appearances. Scale, itch, redness, texture change, loss concentrated at a particular part of the brow, and hair changes elsewhere all help guide the diagnosis.

Pause plucking, waxing, threading, and harsh cosmetic removers over actively shedding areas. Use gentle products around the eyes and stop any item that causes burning, swelling, or a rash. Photographs taken from the same angle can help document whether the border is changing or fine hairs are returning.

Have a dermatologist confirm the cause before applying prescription scalp products near the brows; medicines can enter the eye or affect delicate eyelid skin. Treatment selection depends on the diagnosis, amount of loss, skin findings, other involved sites, medical history, and personal priorities. Cosmetic pencils or powders may provide temporary camouflage if they do not irritate the skin.

Book an assessment for unexplained patchy eyebrow loss, continuing thinning, new scalp patches, eyelash loss, or nail surface changes. Seek prompt care if the eyelids are swollen, painful, crusted, or draining, or if the eye is red, light-sensitive, painful, or has altered vision.

A shiny patch with absent follicle openings, persistent burning, or progressive skin texture change also needs early dermatology review because scarring hair loss can require a different approach. Sudden eyebrow loss accompanied by marked fatigue, weight change, or other general symptoms warrants broader medical evaluation.

Ask what examination features support alopecia areata, whether the follicles remain intact, and whether scalp, eyelash, nail, or blood assessment is appropriate. Clarify which treatments can be used safely close to the eyes, how to apply them precisely, and which eye or skin reactions require stopping treatment.
