Stringy mucus with allergic conjunctivitis

Allergy inflames the conjunctiva and changes the tear film, allowing mucus to form strands. Discharge alone does not establish the cause, particularly if it becomes thick, coloured, or concentrated in one eye.

An allergic pattern is supported by strong itching, clear tears, eyelid puffiness, exposure-related flares, and nasal allergy symptoms. The mucus may stretch into threads because inflamed surface cells release mucus while tears become less stable.

Thick yellow or green discharge, crusting that seals the lids, or symptoms beginning in one eye can occur with infection. Dry eye and eyelid inflammation can also alter discharge, so recurrent strands deserve a closer look rather than repeated self-treatment.

Wash your hands, soften dried material with a clean cool compress, and wipe gently from the inner corner outward using a fresh pad for each eye. Sterile lubricating drops may help rinse loose mucus and support the tear film.

Do not pull strands repeatedly with fingers, tissues, or cotton buds. This can scratch the surface and stimulate more mucus production. Avoid rubbing, eye makeup, and contact lenses until irritation settles. Never use tap water or homemade mixtures as eye drops.

Obtain urgent care for pain, light sensitivity, reduced vision, a suspected scratch or foreign body, chemical exposure, or swelling that is spreading around the eye. Contact-lens wearers should promptly arrange an eye examination for a painful red eye.

Seek clinical advice if discharge turns thick or coloured, the lids repeatedly stick shut, one eye is persistently worse, symptoms recur often, or careful allergy measures bring no relief. The eye surface may need examination to distinguish allergy from infection, dryness, or eyelid disease.

Tell the clinician whether the strands are clear, white, yellow, or green; whether they affect one or both eyes; and whether itching or pain dominates. Ask if preservatives, contact lenses, dry eye, or a seasonal trigger could be contributing and which drop would address the identified cause.
