Over-the-counter options for allergic conjunctivitis

A pharmacist can distinguish preservative-free lubricants from antihistamine or dual-action allergy drops and check whether a product suits your age, pregnancy status, contact-lens use, eye conditions, and other medicines.

Lubricating drops rinse and moisten the eye surface but do not directly switch off the allergic response. Antihistamine drops target histamine-related itching. Some allergy drops also help limit further release of allergy chemicals and may be more useful when symptoms recur during a known season.

Drops marketed only to make redness look whiter can cause rebound redness with repeated use and do not treat the underlying allergy. Antibiotic drops do not treat an allergic reaction.

Read the active ingredient and follow the package directions. Wash your hands, avoid touching the bottle tip to the lashes or eye, and keep the cap clean. Do not share drops. If using more than one eye product, ask the pharmacist how to space them.

Remove contact lenses before applying a drop unless its instructions specifically permit lens use. Leave lenses out while the eyes are actively red, itchy, or producing discharge. Combine medication with a cool compress and steps that reduce exposure to the suspected trigger.

Get urgent eye care for pain, light sensitivity, a new change in vision, injury, chemical exposure, or substantial swelling around the eye. A contact-lens wearer with redness and pain needs prompt assessment after removing the lens.

Book an examination if non-prescription treatment is ineffective, the diagnosis is uncertain, symptoms stay mainly in one eye, or discharge becomes thick rather than watery or stringy. Stop a new product and seek advice if it sharply worsens burning, redness, or swelling.

Discuss which active ingredient matches your symptom pattern, whether preservatives could be irritating your eyes, and whether nasal allergy treatment might also help. Ask for a review if you need drops repeatedly or have glaucoma, dry eye, previous surgery, or another diagnosed eye disorder.
