What to know about an Allergan tissue expander

A surgeon places the expander beneath or near the chest tissue after breast surgery. During follow-up visits, sterile fluid may be added through its filling port, allowing the skin and surrounding tissues to stretch gradually. The expander is usually part of a staged plan rather than the final reconstruction.

The experience varies with prior surgery, radiotherapy, skin healing, and the device position. Tightness, pressure, altered sensation, or uneven shape can occur while the tissues adjust. Your surgical team can explain the planned exchange to a permanent implant or another reconstruction option.

Follow the wound-care, activity, and medication instructions from your surgical team. Attend expansion appointments so the filling process can be assessed. Avoid pressure or strenuous movement until your surgeon clears it, and tell the team about increasing discomfort, skin colour change, drainage, or a change in the device shape.

Call your surgical team promptly if the incision opens, redness spreads, swelling increases, fluid leaks, or pain becomes difficult to control. Fever, feeling very unwell, sudden breast enlargement, or skin that becomes pale, dark, or unusually tense also needs prompt assessment. Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty or facial swelling.

Ask which tissue plane contains the expander, how often it may be filled, what the final reconstruction options are, and how radiotherapy or other cancer treatment could affect timing. Confirm which activities, medicines, and wound changes should prompt a call.
